Google doesn’t index javascript drop down menu’s

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

The dropdown popout menu’s which Dreamweaver can create in any  version up to CS3 are created using with all of the hyperlinks embedded within javascript so the googlebot can’t follow them which if the only way to access the pages is via a dropdown menu then these pages may never actually be indexed which really is the kiss of death to most site.

So what can be done about it.

  • Recreate the dropdown menus in the latest version of Dreamweaver (CS3) using the spry tooolbar which uses  unordered lists for the dropdown links- there is still a javascript which is utilised but the links themselves are in pure html therefore the googlebots can follow them.
  • Add a google site map so that google can follow that to your pages
  • Add a normal html site map so google can follow normal html links to the pages

This site for trophies and personalise gifts is a good example of how drop down menus can be use effectively and efficiently.

Ok Yes Google was right

Ok after deleting many old posts and hunting for the proverbial needle in a haystack I actually found a hidden link in a post!! It was a post that I added so it was definitely a hack that added the malicious link, which could only be seen in code view. Most end users couldn’t click on it as it was hidden in <noscript> tags but google could obviously see it.

So what did I learn?

  • I’ve learn’t to keep up to date with security patches and updates-so I’ve now updated to WordPress 2.5 from 2.2 hoping it is more secure.
  • I’ve learn’t to check the User’s table for any new suspicious users- not that I saw any but you never know.
  • That once you are marked as “bad” within google it can take forever to be upmarked!!! But I’ll let you know how long if ever I ever get unmarked.
  • I’d made the assumption that I’d been marked as”This site may cause harm to your computer” within an hour of updating my theme and doing general maintenance but this marking may occurred a few weeks ago as I haven’t done a search for it in the last few weeks so I should keep an idea of whats happening in Google rather than making assumptions.
  • The more you do online the more likely you are of coming into contact with a hack so it’s a case of not if but when.

Marked in Google-”This site may harm your computer” -Oh s**t

All I did was change this blog’s theme and slightly edit the theme-(Remove some links and simple things like that.

At the same time I removed a lot of old posts, categories and comments but thats it and then within literally an hour Google marked the site with a “This site may harm your computer”  and if you follow the link Google sends you to a page with a big
“Warning- visiting this web site may harm your computer!”
What the?????
I’ve followed all the links, checked everything google and stopbadware.org said to check and I can’t work out why google has done this.So now I am just waiting to see when and if this warning is removed. About the only possible reasons for it happening is maybe this template has vulnerabilites so if google is still unhappy I’ll change the blog template and see what happens!!

This is definately going to be a learning experience for sure!!
