Five things that you should know about Google and Search Engine Optimisation

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Everyone wants to be listed on Google’s first result page so they will get a high number of targeted visitors and the success that this brings.

Unfortunately, many people have not got a clear understanding of how search engine optimization works and what they can expect. So below are 5 key points about google and SEO that should help everyone J

1. Patience – “SEO takes time”

You cannot optimise your website today and expect results tomorrow or next week. Search engine optimization takes time. Search engines have to find your new optimized pages, they have to find the new links to your website, they have to update the index, etc.

2. Maintianance- You must change your web pages

Google loves fresh new content so update your site regular. This can done via a blog or just simple updates like specials or promotional updates.

3. Friends- You need links and you need the right links

Google thinks that if other sites are linking to you then these backlinks are treated as almost recommendations by google. How highly they regard these links depends on the number and quality of the links. The links should be from sites with similar content or on similar topics as you would expect if a link is to be considered as a recommendation then you would expect them to be within the same field. Automatically created backlinks usually won’t help your rankings and they even might get you banned from Google’s index.

Back links should also have your keywords in the link text.

The more attractive your website is, the easier it will be to get good links.

4. Research Research Research-It’s vital you choose the right keywords

Research before your website is created so that the site can be built with the target keywords in mind right from the beginning. You can change and tweak them later on but it is putting the cart before the horse if you have a website created and then begin to think about what keywords your targeting.

5. Be realistic

Getting on the first result page for a highly competitive keyword is possible but your competitors will be old and established websites with a lot of backlinks who will be difficult to outrank because of these factors.

A better option would be to target less competitive keywords and work your way up to the highly competitive ones. Search engines must trust your website before they give you high rankings for very competitive keywords.

Google the domain registrar

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

You may recall I’ve mentioned my surprise when a new .com domain name that I had purchased and put up a coming soon page was indexed by google in what I considered to be record time.

The new site had absolutely no incoming links, I hadn’t added it to my webmaster tools account or done anything at all for Google to know that the domain existed which got my brain wondering what was Google up too.

But I’ve since learn’t that Google is actually now a domain registrar and therefore knows when any new top level (.com .net etc) is registered. So when a new domain name is registered it actually seeks out this new domain for indexing. It only does this for top level domains not second level domains such as .com.au or .co.uk.

Interesting huhhh

So how does this affect our site SEO strategies?? Please leave your idea as comments.

Google dance, spiders, crawling and indexing

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Crawling and Indexing

The Google dance is the updating of the servers which hold Google’s search results. The updating of the results used to sometimes be quite dramatic hence the dance terminology. These days the “Google index updates” are a lot more continuous and subtle but it is still an important concept to be aware of.

Before your web pages can be affected by the “Google index updates” your website needs to be crawled and index by Google “spiders”. Which considering the huge number of web pages on the internet and the number being added everyday gives you an idea why it can take awhile to get into Google results or index.

The spiders called Googlebots are crawling programs, which follow links to fetch documents. This is the first step in a webpage being added to the Google index. These spiders are pieces of software which are on over 10,000 servers. And from these 10,000+ servers Google gets it search results.

Google Dance and Datacenters

Not only Google’s index is spread over more than 10,000 servers, but these servers are, in 12 different data centers.

Datacenters and different Google results

Often when you do a Google search you get back different results why? Because of the datacenters having different indexes!! When you conduct a search through you may get the results from one datacenter and then another time from another datacenter. Which datacenter returns your results can depend on your ip address, browser etc and the of course the Google dance.

The Google Dance Test Domains www2 & www3

The beginning of a Google Dance can always be watched at the test domains www2.google.com and www3.google.com. The reason for having www2 and www3 is rather to show the new index to webmasters which are interested in their upcoming rankings. Many of these webmasters discuss the new index at the Google forums out on the web. These discussions can be observed by Google employees.

More information of how Google collects and ranks results can be found here. It old but still relevant http://www.google.com/librariancenter/articles/0512_01.html

Googles new browser Chrome

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Well I saw the link to try Googles new beta browser Chrome and had to try it out. So what do I think:

I like some features like when pasting into the address bar their is a right click option of “paste and go”- saves me a click so I’m happy and the I like the overall typical clean Google interface.

But where my Google tool bar? I would have thought this would have been built in. So I thought I’d just go and get it again but when I did -it thought my browser was Firefox!! What you don’t recognize your own browser Google – so I thought oh well we’ll see what happen maybe the Firefox Google tool bar with work with Chrome.

OK I’m obviously no techy but I just want my Google tool bar so I’lll try anything!! But again no I wasn’t going to get my toolbar because it told me I had to upgrade my Firefox!! My Firefox is happy thank you very much and I am not upgarding it!

Considering I was using Googles browser and just wanted the Google tool bar I guested I was asking too much of the beta version oh well :(

Overall at the moment it’s not going to be much use to me if I their aren’t any add-ons but I’m going to leave it on anyway and see how it goes just cause I’m a Google girl :)

When did Google last look or index my page

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

So you’ve finally found your page in Google after desperately trying for days, weeks even to get- you’ve checked every day and tried new things every day then viola your in. The instant response is to think that the last change you made was the magic wand that pressed Googles button.

But becareful -when did Google last indexed your page- probably a while before yesterdays change.

how do you know when Google last looked at your page- you find your page in Google then click “cached” below your link to see what Google’s cached version of your page which may be quite different to what you think Google saw and also on this page you can see the date and time Google last looked at your page. One other thing remember Google isn’t or running on Australian time so you may need to factor in the time difference as well.

What is a blog

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

A blog is a website that can be thought of as an online journal. The posts or journal entries generally appear in reverse chronological order so the oldest will be closest to the bottom and the newest at the top.

Another important aspect about blogs is that blog sites use particular software to run them which allows users to log in and maintain their posts/entries etc. There are many places that you can sign up for your own blog for free and begin such as wordpress and blogger. With many hosting accounts a wordpress blog is available as a free addon that can be installed but this is not something that I would recommend for a typical user or blogger.
So why blog?
Well it’s a really easy way to self publish and self promote. You sign up for an account and follow your nose- don’t be scared you can’t really break your blog on wordpress and blogger.

Another reason is the search engines absolutely love blogs so blogging can be a great way to increase your websites search engine optimization results. It’s not a magic wand but with a bit of a strategy your blog make act like fairy dust for your search engine optimizations rankings.
Strategies for blogs
Well that another post topic altogether so check back soon and we’ll look at some

Woohoo – this blog is now not marked “this site may harm your computer”

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

A hugh thank you to Jason Morrison who’s post  on getting Google to remove the marking  “this site may harm your computer” resulted in a review of the site in 2 days and the marking is gone.

6 weeks and still marked as “This site may harm your computer”

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Well I’ve been very patient and waited for Google to come back and see that I have removed the hacked link, plugged the security hole and requested a review of this folder but still my wordpress folder is marked as harmful which is really quite amusing on so many levels but not when it comes to the main issue of results in Google. I also do find it strange that Google keeps coming back and checking out the pages but that it hasn’t realised the malware has been removed but there isn’t much I can do at the moment other than be patient.

I have been considering my options which include deleting this blog and starting all over again- not a prefered option because I think thats just plain giving up!! I could export my blog content and import it into a blog at word press which again isn’t my preferred option but this option would mean I didn’t have to worry about the security issues which is a definite plus !!

While trying to find a solution I found this article which had some more suggestions on what else I could do to have Google review my harmful listing so for the time being I’m following Jason’s advice and hoping for the best.

I’ll keep you posted.
